Professional and Research Activities

Feb. 1995 - present Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione  - Politecnico di Milano
  • Research on control systems for vibration suppression in a large flexible structure with air jet thrusters and/or piezoelectric actuators: modelling, simulation and experimental activity (jointly with the Aerospace Engineering Dept. of the Politecnico di Milano).
  • Simulation study of an innovative geothermal power plant (situated in Latera, Italy), exploiting a low-temperature source of water and carbon dioxide to produce clean steam (in partnership with ENEL S.p.A.). Activities included the modelling of innovative process components, the extension the functionality of the ProcSim simulation environment (in use at the Department Control Lab), the production of a full plant simulator, and the study of the plant dynamics and of the control system structure and tuning. The correct approach to solving the plant control problem required to include optimisation issues. The simulator has also been used by ENEL personnel for control system commissioning activities.
  • Research on the use of Petri Nets for the specification of logic controllers, with application to a small industrial case.
  • Study on the optimal management strategies for a complex co-generation plant (electrical power, hot water and air conditioning), for the new Bank of Italy office buildings in Frascati (in partnership with Project Automation S.p.A., formerly Philips Automation S.p.A). Activities included the analysis of the plant and control system, the modelling of the relevant phenomena, the definition of suitable algorithms for both long-term planning and real-time optimal plant management, and finally the production of code to be integrated in the plant SCADA system.
  • Research in the field of modelling and monitoring of urban water distribution networks, in partnership with Project Automation S.p.A. and C.I.S. S.p.A. Forlì. Activities include quality of service monitoring, static and dynamic modelling of the distribution network, algorithms for non-invasive leakage detection and isolation in the network.
  • Dynamic simulation and simulator validation for the cogeneration plant installed in the ENEA Research Site at La Casaccia (Rome) (in partnership with the ENEA research institute, Italy).
Mar-Jul. 1998 Centre for Process Systems Engineering - Imperial College - London UK
  • Study of fully equation-oriented simulation techniques, with application to the simulation of parts of the Latera Plant.
  • Study of the static optimisation problems arising from the control problem of the Latera Plant
Jun-Dec 1995 Philips Vision Industries, Monza, Italy
  • Work on application of fuzzy logic to the automatic tuning of the final amplifier stages in low-cost colour TV sets, including integration of the fuzzy logic chip in the existing microcontroller-based semi-automatic tuning system.
1993-1994
  • Development of an application for the computer-aided analysis of cranial X-rays for use in orthodontic treatment planning (in partnership with Studio Odontoiatrico Associato Casella-Ghilardi-Cortesi, Cremona)
