Gatto, Professor of Ecology Quantitative ecology and
ecological and environmental modeling are my main research fields in
the past 35 years. I have been trained as a modeler at the Politecnico
di Milano, Milan, Italy, and an ecologist at the University of British
Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. I have always strictly cooperated with
field and lab ecologists because I do believe that good modeling cannot
be done without a first-hand experience of the problems being studied
and good experimentation cannot be done without a conceptual
perspective. My current research interests include: dynamics and
management of marine resources, models of fragmented populations,
extinction risk assessment of wildlife populations, climate change
ecology, parasite ecology, ecological economics.
Besides research and teaching I have also devoted time to the organization and management of my university and to the advancement of ecological science in Italy. From 1991-1999 I have been the chair of the Program in Environmental and Land Engineering, Politecnico di Milano and from 2007-2010 a member of the Academic Senate of the Politecnico di Milano, the body that dictates the university strategy. I have been vicepresident of the Italian Society of Ecology from 1999-2002 and president from 2003-2006. |
