Autonomic Services
Course for PhD students in Information Engineering
Nov. 5-27, 2007
Proff. Barbara
Pernici and Danilo Ardagna
Objectives:
The course introduces the topics of designing and managing services on Grid
and virtualized infrastructures. The goal of the course is to provide a basic
introduction to grid technologies, to discuss their role in Virtual Organizations,
and to present in detail self-managing and autonomic optimization techniques.
Course Timetable (each class will be from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm)
- 5/11 Introduction: Grid, Workflow and autonomic services research issues.
Architecture of Autonomic service centers. slides: AutonomicServices_1a.ppt,
AutonomicServices_1b.ppt
- 12/11 (aula seminari) Design and run time support of autonomic services:
services retrieval, QoS negotiation and optimization, adaptive Web services.
slides (student's presentation:
Miraz slides)
- 14/11 (aula seminari) Design and run time support (cont'd). (student's
presentation: Facca slides)
- 16/11 (aula seminari) slides
Self-healing systems: definition and basic principles; approaches to self-healing
processes; the PAWS approach and WS-Diamond; design methodologies.
- 21/11 (aula PT1) OGSA and WSRF frameworks. Globus toolkit. Virtual machine
Monitors, VMWare and Xen. Example of grid applications: e-science applications,
data-integration applications, desktop grid. slides
- 23/11 (aula 3B) The MAPE cycle of autonomic infrastructures: components
and applications. E-business grid. Design and run time support of autonomic
services: the PAWS approach. QoS issues, context based services. slides
(students's presentations: Cavallaro slides)
- 27/11 (aula 3A) Resource allocation in Grid workflows. slides
(students's presentations: Li, Poli)
